Youngsters today named Stonehenge as the the most famous landmark in the UK, according to a survey.

The striking, megalithic monument which looms from the flat, Wiltshire countryside, beat famous sites such as Blackpool Tower and the White Cliffs of Dover in the poll.

Ancient sites such as Stonehenge and Hadrian's Wall took the top two spots, beating more modern landmarks such as Antony Gormley's Angel of the North and the London Eye.

Some 2,500 youngsters aged eight to 15 were quizzed for the Travelodge poll.

Stonehenge, a world heritage site, is believed to date back 5,000 years.

The purpose of the complex, made of earthworks and towering standing stones is still not clear, with historians offering various explanations for its use and significance.

It is believed that Hadrian's Wall, which dates back to AD122, was built to mark the northern frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain.

Mark Kemp, from Travelodge, said: "It's great news that young Brits are keen to preserve Great Britain's heritage as most of the attractions to make the children's top ten list of iconic British landmarks are steeped in history."

The top 10 landmarks in the survey are:

1. Stonehenge
2. Hadrian's Wall
3. London Eye
4. Edinburgh Castle
5. Buckingham Palace
6. Tower of London
7. White Cliffs of Dover
8. Angel of the North
9. Blackpool Tower
10. St Paul's Cathedral
