80s pop icon and reality TV star David Van Day was the guest of honour at a barbecue at Sanctuary Care’s Chadwell House care home.

Yesterday David, a former member of pop duo Dollar and star of last year’s I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and his fiancé, journalist Sue Moxley, made a return visit to the home in Chadwell Heath, Romford, Essex, which is for residents with dementia.

Home manager Chris Gammons said David and Sue were wonderful guests and sang several hits for the residents, including My Way.

“It was just a wonderful, fantastic day,” she said. “They sat and chatted with all the residents and were absolutely brilliant.”

Chris said David, who visited the home last month, was extremely impressed with Chadwell House and its staff. “He said he’d never been in a home that was so full of care,” she said. “He was just over the moon with the hospitality and how all the residents were all so happy.

“The residents thought he was brilliant. Many of them remembered him from his days in Dollar so they were over the moon to actually meet him.”

David is a high profile supporter of Alzheimer’s Society and works tirelessly to raise funds for the organisation, which provides support for people with dementia and their carers.

David Van Day, Alzheimer's Society Supporter said: "My mother has Alzheimer's so I know from first hand experience what it's like to care for a loved one with dementia. I was delighted to be invited again to Chadwell House and meet all the residents, staff and carers on such a lovely day. It's great to be able to cheer people up a bit with a good old fashioned sing-a-long and have some fun."

The star has also given the home 20 tickets for residents to see his performance in The Good Old Days Sing-a-long at Thurrock’s Thameside Theatre on Wednesday 9th September. The musical will raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.
