As British hero Andy Murray served his way through Wimbledon, tenants from Wakefield and District Housing's (WDH) Falcon Drive Independent Living Scheme were served some traditional tennis delicacies as they held their very own “Wimbledon Day”.

Over 30 Falcon Drive residents got right into the spirit of the British Tennis Championships last Wednesday 1July as they dined on those traditional Wimbledon fans’ favourites – strawberries and cream washed down with fresh orange juice.

The distinctive Wimbledon theme was rounded-off by the stipulation that each participant wear white clothing, as per the strict players’ dress code enforced at the real event.

Caroline Rayner, WDH Scheme manager at Falcon Road Community Centre says the Wimbledon Day was a great success.

“As happens with all our events, the days leading up to the Wimbledon Day saw everyone very excited about meeting their friends and having a laugh,” said Caroline. “They all had to do a bit of digging around to find the correct white attire and they all contributed to getting the day organised.

“The community centre is a massive part of peoples lives – there’s always something happening Monday to Friday and we are always organising special events. Next month we’re off to Whitby.”

Resident Kathleen Harrison says the Wimbledon Day is a good example of how our events can play a positive part in local life.

“It’s all about us all getting out and about and meeting our friends,” said Kathleen.
“Today has been such fun. We’re all friends and we have full and active lives.”

WDH has 53 community centres that hold similar social events and activities on a daily basis.
