A solicitor was ordered to pay £680 after using his grandmother's disabled badge to park his sports car.

Shaob Panwar, 35, a solicitor from Hartwell Close in Beswick, Greater Manchester, used his grandmother's badge to park his black Audi TT in Manchester city centre in August.

He told Manchester Magistrates' Court he only used the badge while dropping off his grandmother at a doctor's surgery - but could produce no evidence to back up his story.

He was fined £360 and ordered to pay £320 costs by magistrates on Wednesday.

He is one of seven motorists fined £4,684 this week for misusing disabled badges in Manchester.

Councillor Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council's executive member for the environment, said: "The blue badge system was set up to help motorists who have a genuine need, and anyone who abuses it for their own means only makes life harder for these people.

"Any motorists who try doing this, with no regard for the needs of genuinely disabled people, should take note of these cases, and be warned that our patrols are on the look-out. We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who attempts to abuse this system."
