London Mayor Boris Johnson joined Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales in opening a centre that will offer young people somewhere to play and take part in organised activities.

The Rokeby Community Centre in Rokeby Street, Stratford will be managed by Newham-based charity Community Links.

The building was funded through the Private Equity Foundation and complements the £150,000 multi-use games area and landscaping provided by Newham Council.

A further £120,000 will be used to renew the play facilities and further landscaping.

Sir Robin said: This is a fantastic facility and I would like to thank Community Links and PEF for working with us on this project.

The centre was introduced following consultations with local residents, who wanted somewhere for young people to go and take part in organised sports, arts and other leisure activities.

Newham has one of the most extensive estate-based sports programme in the country and this centre, together with the games area, will provide local people with a great opportunity to take part in sports at their doorstep.
