Vandals have caused £1,500 worth of damage after targeting a park regularly used by people with autism or sensory impairments.

Several memorial Silk trees planted within the Sensory Garden at Friary Park in Friern Barnet were snapped at their trunks and branches were left lying across pathways.

The garden was designed and built five years ago to provide people with disabilities with a clean, green and safe open space to enjoy.

Earlier this year the park was awarded Green Flag status for its welcoming appearance and atmosphere.

With each tree costing up to £300, the council plans to replace the damaged trees and install protection to prevent any further damage occurring.

Councillor Andrew Harper, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said:

"The thought somebody might feel it acceptable to come and damage these trees and spoil the garden is just horrifying and I'm sure the vast majority of residents would share my disgust."

"The council will be returning the garden to its former glory as soon as possible so people with autism or sensory impairments in the borough can continue to enjoy this wonderful green space."
