Brent Council is to consult on major regeneration plansfor the North Circular Road area between Hanger Lane and Staples Corner.

The report, titled, A New Image for the North Circular: Framework for Change, will form the basis of an ongoing consultation process with communities, businesses and other stakeholders.

This process will involve surveys, exhibitions and workshops throughout the winter of 2008/09.

The North Circular Road splits the North West London borough of Brent into two, dividing the suburban communities in the north of the borough from the more inner-city environment in the south.

The six lane road, which carries traffic through the borough from east to west, is seen as a formidable social and physical barrier for residents.

Over 3.5 million vehicles a year already pass through Brent on the North Circular Road, including significant road-freight.

As London’s growth fuels increased road use, environmental and health concerns are becoming more apparent.

The entire area is a designated Air Quality Management Area, with local communities experiencing high incidences of respiratory problems. Noise pollution too is well above comfort levels for local residents.

Andy Donald, Assistant Director Regeneration at Brent Council, said:
“Imagination and ambition are required to build a new long term vision for the North Circular Road and the surrounding area.

"The long term objective is to gradually transform the area, taking opportunities to create a series of distinct places in line with local residents' wishes.

"The council wants a significantly improved environment for local communities with less pollution, more green space and better community facilities.”
