Westminster Council names and shames Government and big business over cigarette litter
More than 20,000 illegally imported cigarettes and three tonnes of banned sweets have been discovered by Southampton City Council's Port Health Team.
The discovery was made when council staff, joined by a Customs and Excise officers, examined a large container at Southampton's Border Inspection Post.
Despite a packing list saying the 40ft container, which came in on the container ship Chicago Express from the Far East, should have contained 18 tonnes of mixed food stuffs from Vietnam, staff soon uncovered a host of illegally imported goods.
As well as the cigarettes and banned jelly sweets, officers also uncovered cartons of meat products with no documentation and cartons of fish paste and condensed milk which were not declared.
The importer will now be issued with a statutory notice for the destruction of the goods and Customs and Excise will charge the importer for the undeclared goods.
