TODAY IN COMMUNITIES

YOUNGSTERS in Richmond defied this summers downpours to mark a national day of play.

The Richmond YMCA Playday originally had to be postponed because of the wet weather, but despite the change of date and poor forecasts, the event the first of its kind in the town attracted dozens of young people.

The Playday was organised by the YMCA in partnership with Richmondshire District Council, Richmondshire Play Partnership and supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

It was held in Richmonds Ronaldshay Park, and attractions included a bucking banana, pillow wars and a bouncy bungee run.

Ken Allinson, Chief Executive of Richmond YMCA, said: The Playday was enjoyed by all, and built on the success of the BMX and skateboarding competition we held during the Richmond Meet weekend. We are looking forward to working with our partners to provide more events for local young people to participate in.

Jo-Anne Simpson, Community and Cultural Wellbeing Officer at Richmondshire District Council, said: The event was extremely well supported by the community, despite the change of date and local weather forecasts. We hope it will be the first of many Playdays to come!
