Mencap launches new website developed by young people with a learning disability

Mencap, the learning disability charity, announced today the launch of a website, designed with and for young people with a learning disability. “Youngmencap” (www.mencap.org.uk/youngmencap) is sponsored by AOL and is part of the charity’s mission to put the needs and views of children and young people with a learning disability at the heart of its work.

The website has been developed together with a steering group of young people with a learning disability, aged between 14 and 19 years. The group led the development and testing of the site, as well as providing content and advising on accessibility.

Dame Jo Williams, Mencap’s chief executive, said: “Young people with a learning disability deserve the right to live their lives the way they want. Too often, they are seen and not heard. Mencap wants to empower young people with a learning disability to speak up about what they want from life.

“The new site offers a safe environment for young people with a learning disability where they can go for advice, share experiences, learn new life skills, see what’s new, and be inspired to move on.”

Michael Steckler, Managing Director of AOL UK, sponsors of the website, said: “The Internet is such an incredibly important communication tool for young people and those with learning disabilities deserve the same opportunities as others. Accessibility is about understanding the value of the Internet to people with disabilities and we are excited to be involved in this project to make the Internet accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

The interactive site provides a fun and friendly place where young people can find information to help them at school, at home or when they are out and about. Young people can share comments, pictures and videos on the site.
