Campaigners will call on the Government to tackle homophobic bullying in schools at a conference being held tomorrow to mark the start of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) History
Month.
Schools Out! is urging the Department for Children, Schools and Families to say it is proud of LGBT teachers and to challenge homophobic attitudes amongst staff, students and parents.
The group has invited Young People's Minister Kevin Brennan to speak at its conference in London, along with LGBT rights campaigners, educators, entertainers and trade union representatives.
Sue Sanders, co-chair of Schools Out!, said she hoped the conference would persuade the Government of the need to take urgent action to prevent homophobic bullying of LGBT teachers and students,
rather than dealing with cases of abuse after they occur.
"Our research shows the dreadful extent of homophobia in education, which is why I want the Department for Children, Schools and Families to say they are proud of LGBT teachers in the same way they
celebrate black and minority ethnic people," she said.
Schools Out! has been working towards equality for LGBT people in education since 1974 and instigated LGBT History Month in 2005 in a bid to celebrate the lives and achievements of the LGBT
community.
