Tackling racism in schools
A ground-breaking conference on dealing with racism in schools is being organised by Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council.
Through interactive workshops and keynote lectures, the conference will help pupils challenge racism and empower young people and professionals to deal with racist incidents.
Working together during the day, delegates can learn how to address and deal with racism by making sure young people know their rights and that policies and procedures are in place and
working.
Young people, teachers, governors, volunteers and professionals working in Children and Young Peoples Services can attend the day-long event at the University of Leicester, on Thursday, March
6.
Keynote speakers will focus on the effects of racism; racism in largely white schools; and learning about racism through the curriculum. Delegates can choose between eight different
workshops.
The conference aims to help schools create environments that positively value all people and take a stand against racism and where young people feel able to play an active role in doing something
about the issues covered.
Since 1999, as a result of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence, schools have had to record and investigate all racist incidents and they must now evaluate whether pupils feel safe from racist
incidents. A total of about 1,000 racist incidents are reported every year in schools in the city and county.
Richard Wale, Head of the City Council’s Multicultural Service, said: “Research that has focused on young people shows schools do not pick up on every incident that actually happens.
It’s important for the young people that we know about all incidents and what further action we can take to prevent them, to ensure that everyone gets the most out of their
education.”
County Councillor Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services, said: “We are committed to eliminating racism and this conference will give people the power to
deal with racist incidents and challenge racism. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who works with young people to learn more about preventing racism.”
Dealing with Racist Incidents: Preventing Racism and Empowering Young People will take place from 9am to 4pm. For more information, or to book a place, e-mail Dawn Westcott at:
