Taking to the streets for Walkabout Wednesday

Amber Valley Housing staff are hitting the streets to find out what makes communities tick and improve local neighbourhoods.

Under a new initiative, known as Walkabout Wednesdays, teams of staff from across the organisation will be taking to the streets in certain areas every Wednesday, along with local people, to highlight environmental issues.

Local residents, agencies, organisations and councillors are being invited to join the walkabouts, to help flag up such as vandalism, litter, or repairs needed to homes and communal areas.

It is also a chance for residents to say whether they feel more resident groups or community facilities are needed.

The first areas to be visited by the teams include Ironville; Delves Court, Heanor; Parks Estate, Belper; Parks Avenue and surrounding areas of South Wingfield, and Firs Estate, Alfreton.

Lindsey Williams, chief executive of Amber Valley Housing, took part in the first walkabout in Ironville. She said: “We are committed to providing a first-rate service to our local residents.

“That means getting out into the communities and speaking to residents. Staff are really enthusiastic about working with local people to see first-hand the needs of local neighbourhoods.

“We hope that many residents will take the opportunity to meet and talk to us as we go out and about across the borough.”

During the walkabout, any issues identified will be noted down and followed up with relevant Amber Valley team members, or other agencies.  Progress will then be fed back to the resident or councillor to ensure action is taken quickly.
