More from Colchester Borough Council

The 21st century could see a massive increase in the number of trees in Colchester under a new scheme launched today [Monday 12 February] by Borough Council Leader Cllr Robert Davidson.

In its first year, the new "Trees for Years" project will see 2007 trees given away to residents to help improve the borough's green credentials.

Councillor Davidson said: "Every year the Council requires thousands of new trees to be planted by developers in Colchester's regeneration areas, but that leaves the rest of the borough to fend for itself.

"So to help put this right we are inviting members of the public and Colchester organisations to come along and claim one or more of the 2007 trees we're giving to people to plant and tend in private areas for the overall benefit of Colchester and its wildlife.

"In an age when the contribution that trees make to the environment is at last being recognised, we're delighted to be able to help residents and organisations from anywhere in Colchester do their bit by planting and nurturing trees. Creating more natural habitats for wildlife will help make Colchester an even greater place to live, so come along to collect your tree to plant for the green future of Colchester!"

The public will be able to collect free trees this Saturday and Sunday [17 and 18 February] for planting on their own property. Trees will be available from Rowan House in Sheepen Road from 10am to 2pm each day.  Those who are unable to collect their own trees are encouraged to ask for help from their friends or family.

Cultivation guidance will be available so that suitable trees can be selected, taking account of the ultimate size and form of mature specimens.

The trees species have been selected which are native to this country and suitable for Colchester soils. Being native trees they will attract birds and other wildlife to the area where they are planted.

The public will be able to select from the following native species:
Acer campestre -- Field Maple
Betula pendula -- Silver Birch
Fraxinus excelsior - Ash
Prunus avium -- Wild Cherry
Quercus robur -- Pedunculate Oak
Sorbus aucuparia -- Rowan
Sorbus terminalis -- Wild Service Trees
Tilia cordata -- Small Leaved Lime
