Fireworks will soon start to be sold again throughout the County as the Chinese New Year approaches. Trading Standards is reminding those businesses who registered with them for Bonfire Night that they are still registered to sell fireworks for the Chinese New Year celebrations. But other retailers wishing to sell fireworks during this time will need to register with Trading Standards. This is important so that firework safety and standards of storage can be monitored.
Fireworks are particularly important in celebrating the Chinese New Year as they symbolise driving out the dragon of the old year. It is believed that the first fireworks to be made over 2,000 years ago were Chinese Crackers. They are still used in China today, but are now banned from sale to the general public here.
Fireworks for the Chinese New Year can only be legally sold where the retailer is registered to do so and only between the15th and 18th February for this year’s celebrations.
All fireworks sold must conform to the safety requirements of the British Standard. Certain fireworks, including Chinese Crackers, are banned from sale to the general public.
Action will be taken against those traders who ignore the rules, including possible prosecution. This could result in up to 6 months imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000, or both, if found guilty.
David Bull, Head of Trading Standards, said: “We find that the majority of businesses are responsible, as they do register with us and store and sell their fireworks correctly. However, there are some who will sell outside of the restricted periods which can lead to unacceptable periods of noise and irritation for the general public. In addition there is also the added worry that unsafe and banned fireworks could be sold, thereby endangering lives. The registration and licensing system ensures fireworks are stored and sold safely. Businesses who flout the rules are putting themselves and their local community at risk and I would encourage anyone who believes fireworks are being sold or stored illegally to get in touch and report such behaviour to us”
