People are being reassured that the County Council is geared up to tackle bird flu should it occur.

There is no reason to expect a bird flu outbreak here but residents are being reminded that plans are in place to manage one.

DEFRA would be responsible for dealing with any cases but the County Council would support the overall plan and enforce movement restrictions.

The County Council would put up signs detailing control zones, set up a dedicated advice line, issue regular updates on the latest position and provide up-to-date information on its website.

This would be mainly carried out by trading standards officers with help from other local authoritiy staff. Vehicles, disinfectant, face masks, overalls and other equipment would also be available.

This DEFRA-led multi-agency response would involve all local authorities, the police the Environment Agency and the Health Protection Agency.

Along with all local authorities in Leicestershire and Rutland, the County Council has also signed up to a local contingency plan which sits alongside DEFRA's response arrangements.

The County Council has a plan in place to help contain nearly 40 other animal diseases such as foot and mouth, ical swine fever and rabies.

David Parsons, Leader of the County Council, said: "Although there is no immediate threat to Leicestershire, I want to reassure people that we are geared up and ready to act rapidly to tackle bird flu, should it occur."
