The borough council’s website is at the UK’s top when it comes to air quality information.
Two leading national magazines ranked Ellesmere Port and Neston’s pages as one of the best in the country in their annual reviews of nearly 500 local authority websites.
Both Air Quality Bulletin and Air Quality Management gave the top possible five out of five marks to both the quality of information on the site, including its design, and how easy it was to find.
The Air Quality Bulletin review praised the site as “exceptionally good” with clear links from the homepage to “live pollution info” and their “excellent air quality web pages which include the dedicated Airwatch site”.
This is the third time the site has appeared in the country’s top ten and the fifth year in succession that it has been top in Cheshire.
There is a wealth of air quality information available on the website as well as links to more detailed information. Users can access real time locally-monitored data and get an indication of regional forecasts of pollution.
Mike Whittaker, Head of Environmental Services, said: “We are delighted to stay at the top of the league for air quality information and hope the local community will continue to be reassured that local air quality is being continually monitored and it can be seen to be good.”
The service came into its own during a fire at a scrap yard in Ellesmere Port earlier this month. Residents were able, by means of the website, to check the fire’s effect on air quality as it happened. Also residents could be reassured by looking at the Electronic Display Boards located at Cheshire Oaks and in the Town Centre which gave regular updates.
Members of the public can also access pages from the council's website at a touch-screen kiosk located in the main foyer of the Council Offices in Ellesmere Port. This provides internet access to people who might not necessarily have it. Also the touch-screen and keyboard are at a height that is accessible to wheelchair users.
For more information visit the council’s website at www.epnbc.gov.uk and click on the Airwatch link or keep an eye on the Public Display Units in the town centre and Cheshire Oaks.
