Council targets empty homes

PRIVATE landlords are being urged to back an initiative aimed at tackling the blight of empty homes in Ellesmere Port and Neston.

Property owners are being invited to hear more about ways they can help cut the number of empty dwellings in the borough at the next meeting of the Private Landlords Forum on Wednesday 13 September.

Stan Ellison, of the council’s Private Housing Renewal Unit, said: ”Empty homes can blight communities, reduce property values and encourage vandalism. Although it’s not a major problem in the borough the council is keen to raise awareness of this issue among landlords and private owners.”

An action plan is already in place aimed at meeting government targets for tackling the problem.

Part of the council’s strategy is to flag up existing cash incentives for landlords who want to improve their properties. Depending on the area 50% grants up to £20,000 and 25% grants up to £10,000 are available.

Landlords concerned about a shabby or derelict empty property next door are also urged to get in touch, as local authorities have powers to purchase or manage vacant properties.

 
Council officers will also introduce private landlords to the tenant deposit scheme, part of the 2004 Housing Act, which comes into force in April 2007.

Helen Edge, Private Sector Liaison Officer, will explain her role in helping private landlords with a variety of issues, and there will also be an update on any changes in housing benefit.
