Sevenoaks District's first ever conference to discuss the future challenges posed by public and private transport will be taking place in Swanley later this month.
The conference will explore current and future transport issues and ways to encourage more people to use sustainable forms of travel. The findings will be used to develop Sevenoaks District's first ever transport strategy.
A wide variety of groups and organisations have been invited to the conference from the County Council and the South East Regional Assembly, to train and bus company representatives through to local cycling, walking and environmental groups.
Local residents are also invited to attend the transport conference. Spaces are limited and are available on a first come first served basis.
Everyone present will have an opportunity to shape Sevenoaks District's transport strategy by taking part in discussion groups covering, tackling traffic congestion, encouraging people to cycle, walk or use public transport, parking and exploring why people use their cars.
The transport conference is taking place at the Woodlands Centre in Swanley on Wednesday 20 September from 9.30am to 4.15pm.
Residents who would like to book a space should call Matthew Hogben at Sevenoaks District Council on 01732 227000 or e-mail policy.environment@sevenoaks.gov.uk.
Cllr Gary Williamson, the Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for transport issues, says: "In common with the vast majority of the country, transport poses significant future challenges, be it increased car journey times due to congestion, pollution associated with motor vehicles use, access to affordable and reliable public transport or safe walking or cycling alternatives. We hope that by working with our partners, businesses, voluntary organisations and pressure groups, we can begin to tackle some of these difficult issues."
Although Sevenoaks District Council is not responsible for all aspects of transport, it is one of a growing number of district councils that are drawing up their own transport strategy in partnership with their county council and the wide variety of public, private and voluntary groups and organisations that have a role to play in transport.
