A 54-home affordable housing scheme, developed by Servite Houses, has won a design award from Enfield Council in appreciation of its design excellence.
Teal Close was judged winner by Enfield Council and the Conservation Advisory Group, for improving the visual quality of the Borough and for making an outstanding contribution to Enfield’s built environment.
Servite Chief Executive Matthew Fox, said: "We are really pleased that the excellent design of these new homes has been recognised. Servite prides itself on innovation and Teal Close is a perfect example of that. With creative use of materials and space, the design has turned a limited site into fantastic homes - making a real feature of the open parkland. Not only have we provided much needed rented family housing, but also a homeownership opportunity for keyworkers who wouldn't otherwise be able to get on to the housing ladder. This scheme proves that low-cost doesn't mean low quality!"
The completed project, worth approximately £10 million, was designed by Yurky Cross Chartered Architects. The scheme was created from a pencil-shaped brownfield site formerly owned by British Rail. The site is a quarter of a mile long, but only 20 metres across at its widest point.
Michael Cross, Yurky Cross director, said: "This site presented a tough challenge and demanded a strong design solution. We are particularly pleased, therefore, that the scheme is judged successful by winning this award.”
The development also achieved an Ecohomes rating of ‘Very Good’, and a host of ‘green’ features, including timber from sustainable resources, high efficiency SEDBUK A rated boilers, and water flow regulators were integrated into the design.
