TODAY IN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

Commenting on the announcement of the misplaced disc, data security vendor SanDisk said that organisations that suffer a data breach on this scale need to address three key issues, to help deal with the breach and to prevent further losses.

Jason Holloway, SanDisk sales manager for Northern Europe said: First, organisations must be brutally honest about what devices and what data have been lost. For example, we know that in the first half of this year, 26 USB memory sticks with classified information were either stolen or misplaced in the MoD.

Second, they must establish why the data was on that device or disc in the first place what was it going to be used for, and by who? And did it need to be placed there?

Third, sensitive data must be protected by strong, industry-standard, mandatory encryption, especially on a mobile device, but also when its at rest. In March this year, SanDisk surveyed IT managers and end-users, and 12% of end users reported finding a USB flash drive in a public place. Whats more, 55% indicated they would try and view the data on it. So encryption is a must-have.
