Police at the spot where baby's body found dumped in bag
Police are today continuing to search for the mother of a newborn baby girl whose body was found dumped in a bag.
The remains were discovered in a holdall by a jogger on a cycle path in Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, on Wednesday.
The body was removed from the path for a post-mortem examination to be carried out, as officers stood guard around a cordon at the scene.
The cause of death is yet to be established, Strathclyde Police said.
The focus of the inquiry has quickly moved to finding the dead baby's mother, who investigators fear may be in need of urgent medical attention.
Detective Inspector Mark McGowan said: "Clearly she is our main cause of concern. We need to make sure she is OK and getting the appropriate medical treatment.
"We need to give her the help and support she needs and ascertain why such a tragedy as this occurred.
"If anyone knows who the mother is, please, for her sake, inform the police or social services."
The remains were found on the track in the Devol Glen area at around 5.40pm on Wednesday.
Pathology and forensic tests were being carried out on the body yesterday.
The path is part of the Glasgow and Clyde Coast cycle route network.
Mr McGowan said it was a well-used track, and urged people who had noticed anything out of the ordinary to come forward.
"We are asking anyone who may have seen something unusual in the area, and perhaps did not think it was anything untoward at the time, to get in touch," he said.
Local man Robert Kinaird said he used the cycle path two or three times a week and he knew the route to be a busy one with joggers, dog walkers and cyclists.
DI McGowan added: "This is a tragedy that does not occur very often. We are doing everything we can to get to the bottom of why this happened and talk to the mother and ascertain the circumstances."
