Succeeding in your interview as if going for gold.......

I’d never heard Sally Gunnell speak until this year’s speech day and, wow, how much we have in common. Sally talked about how she won her gold medal at the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 and for those of you that know me personally will know that that is not the common ground. I’ve never managed to jump a hurdle in my life. But the way Sally prepared sounded oh so familiar. And it will sound familiar to many of you that I have coached.
 

“70% of the race is in the mind, it is the biggest tool we have” and getting your mind race fit is as critical as getting your body race fit. Her confidence in the race came from knowing that she had done all the preparation that was required. For four years she had eaten right, slept right, trained right and thought right. She’d done all the work. Part of the thinking right work was the creative visualisation that she had done. Sally had literally run that race every step of the way, in her head, sometimes a hundred times a day. She had visualised every jump and every move and won every race in her mind. OF the actual race she says she does not remember a thing, she was in the zone, on auto pilot, whichever you want to call it.

When the tall, perfectly athletic American girl looked her up and down with a curled lip, Sally took her negative thoughts and screwed them up into a ball and threw them away. The people who are successful in life are the ones that can control those negative voices.
