Pensioners and postal workers will join a demonstration today to protest at the closure of post offices
Pensioners and postal workers will join a demonstration today to protest at the closure of post offices in London.
The Communication Workers Union and National Pensioners Convention have organised the event outside the Trafalgar Square branch as part of a campaign against the closure of post offices as well as the transfer of work to WH Smith.
Andy Furey, national officer of the CWU, said: "The Post Office is a public service which lies at the heart of communities and is essential to small businesses. Londoners need these services. They cannot be provided by private companies who do not have the skills, space or dedication of loyal Post Office staff.
"Privatisation will only continue the dumbing down of British postal services at a cost to workers, communities and businesses everywhere."
Dot Gibson of the NPC added: "Post Office closures and franchising disproportionately affect vulnerable people - especially the elderly and disabled, who have greater access problems."
